I I suffered from atopic dermatitis caused by cosmetics , and I was suffering mentally and physically every day.
After that, I worked in product development at a major cosmetics company, and learned why my skin had become rough.
I also learned about the petroleum system in cosmetics. I'm confused... I'm confused when I see the surprising irritating and ineffective ingredients in organic and additive-free cosmetics...
High-quality skincare that's also good for the environment. Utilizing the ancient wisdom of coexisting with nature, and incorporating modern wisdom, let's create FRMA! From Ancient Times To Now the first one is cosmetics ♪

I wrote this together with Hinako Hayashi, a university student with an interest in the environment.
Vegetables and prepared foods line the shelves of supermarkets. Each one is beautifully packaged and exudes a sense of cleanliness. Plastic has made our lives more convenient and is now an indispensable part of everyday life. However, at the same time, plastic has become a major factor in environmental destruction and is one of the major problems we face in modern times. While plastic certainly makes our lives more convenient, I think we need to properly understand the current situation and think about it. Environmental issues are health and skin issues. I believe that a good environment brings us closer to a happy mental state and is an essential element for living a happy life. |

Breakdown of plastic waste and recycling rate

Did you know that 46% of all plastic waste comes from households? The largest proportion of that comes from plastic used in soft drinks.

In recent years, there has been a growing call for plastic recycling, which is the process of converting used plastic products into reusable materials, thereby reducing waste and making effective use of resources.
Recycling is important because plastic is a petroleum-based resource whose use on Earth continues to increase. Plastic waste is one of the leading causes of environmental pollution, severely impacting marine and wildlife.

The importance of recycling

Greenhouse gas reduction
1. Recycling reduces the consumption of natural resources because plastic is reused as raw material to produce new plastic.
2. The recycling process uses less energy than the process of producing new plastic.
3 : Recycling plastic products reduces greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to climate change.
86% of waste plastic is put to effective use, while the remaining 14% is disposed of by incineration or landfill. A rough breakdown of recycling is as follows: 23% is material recycling, in which waste plastic is used as raw material to make plastic products again; 5% is chemical recycling, in which waste plastic is chemically treated to break it down and reuse it as raw materials; and 58% is said to be used to recover the heat generated during incineration and use it for power generation, etc.

LCA: Life Cycle Assessment
______________________________________ ______________________________________
Here, I would like to introduce an important concept: LCA. LCA stands for Life Cycle Assessment, a concept that cannot be avoided when considering the overall burden on the environment. Have you ever heard the phrase "cradle to grave"? In other words, it is the comprehensive quantification and assessment of the entire process from input to output from the Earth (from resource extraction to disposal). It is easy to imagine the manufacturing and usage processes for a single product or service, but it may not be easy to imagine where the original materials come from and how they are disposed of.
However, this concept is extremely important as a measure of the burden that human activities place on the environment. The benefits of LCA include the improvement effects on a company's products and services, and the ability to visualize the environmental burden, which can lead to increased social credibility for the company. However, the disadvantage is that LCA requires the accumulation of a huge amount of data, which can be a burden for some companies.

Bottles and plastic bottles

Many people think that glass bottles have a lower environmental impact than PET bottles. However, because glass bottles are heavy, they are not suitable for transportation. Therefore, it is true that a simple comparison with PET bottles is not possible. Cosmetics, which are often in one-way bottles, have a high environmental impact. However, it has been found that reusable returnable bottles have a lower environmental impact than not only PET bottles, but also paper containers and aluminum cans.
However, there are currently very few facilities that offer returnable bottles. I have never seen a cosmetic company use returnable bottles other than Loop's initiative. I also asked Loop about the cost, but they said it was completely impossible for a small company like us.
・I'd love to hear more information!! Please contact support@frma.earth!
We are currently exploring FRMA containers. 100% bioplastic is not yet possible due to quality control issues. The remaining 90% is 10% bioplastic. We are currently testing the same plastic formulation as before. If the container becomes more expensive, we will have to raise the price. We believe that the best thing is to have it recycled.

FRMA and Plastics
______________________________________ ______________________________________
FRMA uses PET containers . I considered glass bottles, but I learned that unless they are reusable, returnable bottles, they're not eco-friendly. Cosmetics use single-use bottles, which have a relatively large environmental impact. Glass bottles also emit large amounts of carbon dioxide during production and recycling. However, PET uses bottle-to-bottle technology: one PET bottle can be produced from one PET bottle, resulting in an excellent recycling rate of 86%! However, it also has a drawback: it doesn't last forever, and it apparently deteriorates over time. It's a tough decision! I'd like to ask the latest experts. Bottles? PET ? As technology evolves, I think it would be fine to switch to glass bottles if they could be produced in a process that doesn't emit carbon dioxide. Aluminum is also an option, but for people like me who suffer from metal allergies, aluminum cosmetic containers are dangerous to the skin. I've replaced all metal parts with plastic, and my skin irritation has improved.
It would be great if paper containers could be used for cosmetics, but I wonder if they are not allowed from a quality control perspective, or if they contain preservatives that are very irritating to the skin... I hope that technology will advance so that we can make better containers.
